Crown Holdings, Inc. (crowncork.com) broke ground September 9, 2026 on its first beverage can manufacturing facility in India, kicking off construction on a two-line plant in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, that will produce approximately 2.2 billion aluminum cans annually. The facility is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2027, adding significant regional supply capacity to one of the fastest-growing beverage markets in the world.
Why India, Why Now
India's beverage sector—spanning ready-to-drink, beer, energy drinks, and carbonated soft drinks—has seen accelerating demand for aluminum cans as both multinational and domestic brands shift away from glass and PET for portability, shelf life, and sustainability reasons. Crown's move positions the company as a local-supply partner for customers who have historically depended on imported cans or more limited domestic options. For beverage brands operating or expanding in South Asia, a high-capacity domestic supplier removes a meaningful constraint on packaging procurement and supply chain planning.
Investment and Government Backing
Following the groundbreaking ceremony—conducted with local traditions—Crown executives met with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath to discuss the investment's progress. Crown received the official land allotment letter for the project at that meeting, clearing a key administrative hurdle. Djalma Novaes, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, framed the plant as both a commercial and sustainability play: "The Unnao facility will combine advanced manufacturing technology, operational excellence and responsible resource management to support our customers' growth while creating long-term value for the region." The facility is designed to meet high quality and sustainability standards, reinforcing aluminum's profile as a recyclable packaging format across alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage categories.
Capital Outlook
Crown confirmed it continues to expect full-year capital expenditures of approximately $550 million, with the India facility representing one of the company's marquee growth investments. For beverage brands and foodservice operators sourcing cans across Asia, Crown's entry into domestic Indian manufacturing could eventually ease pricing pressure and lead times that have challenged regional beverage packaging and distribution strategies. The Unnao plant was first announced in April 2026; the groundbreaking marks the transition from planning to active construction.
