Natural cork is not retreating from the wine aisle — it is tightening its grip. Strategic market research commissioned by the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR) and the Natural Cork Council using NielsenIQ data for the 52-week period ending July 2026 shows cork-sealed wines generated $7.74 billion, or 62.3% of all U.S. off-premise wine dollar sales, across a total market valued at $12.42 billion. Volume tracked comparably strong at 56.32 million cases — nearly half of total case movement in the channel.

Premium Pricing Power

The price-per-case gap between closures tells a compelling story for wine buyers and on-premise operators evaluating portfolio mix. Cork-sealed wines averaged $137.37 per case across all price tiers, compared with $107.92 per case for screwcaps and just $44.63 per case for alternative closures. Narrowing to bottles priced at $8.00 and above, the average case realization for cork climbs to $147.88. At the luxury end ($25.00+), cork captured 95% of total domestic revenue, and among the Top 100 U.S. wine brands, cork secured 97% of luxury-tier dollar sales. Even in the competitive Ultra Premium segment ($15.00–$24.99), cork held a 54% revenue share.

For restaurateurs and beverage directors building wine program strategy, the data underscores a direct correlation between cork closure and consumer willingness to trade up — a dynamic that has implications not only for bottle shop operators but for on-premise list curation and by-the-glass margin management.

Growth Across White Varieties

Cork's reach extends well beyond red wine and special-occasion formats. In the Top 100 U.S. wine brands segment, cork-sealed wines accounted for 49% of all active white wine SKUs and generated 44% of total white wine revenue ($3.15 billion) during the study period. Within the $8.00-and-above tiers, white wine maintained a 75% cork SKU presence.

Chardonnay remains the benchmark, driving over half of all white U.S. wine sales at $1.60 billion and holding a 59.9% revenue share ($961 million) within the category. Sauvignon Blanc data adds further nuance: cork-sealed Sauvignon Blanc indexed at a 34.5% higher average case realization than white wine category averages overall, and commanded a 14.3% price premium over screwcap alternatives ($144.17 vs. $126.13 per case). As Sauvignon Blanc continues its growth arc across U.S. restaurant beverage programs, that premium signal at shelf could reinforce its positioning on premium and fine-dining wine lists.

The data also shows cork's resilience during a difficult macroeconomic stretch for the U.S. wine industry. While non-glass and synthetic alternative closures posted a steep -28% year-over-year revenue contraction in the Popular Premium tier ($8.00–$11.99), upper-tier cork sales fell just -2% YoY in the Luxury segment — a notably smaller drawdown given broader category softness.

"Natural cork isn't just for special occasion bottles," said Patrick Spencer, Executive Director of the Natural Cork Council. "It is the leading revenue driver for the entire U.S. wine market. Capturing over 62% of domestic off-premise dollar sales and driving 8 out of the top 10 revenue-growth wines in the country, cork provides everyday shoppers with an immediate signal of quality and sustainability."

APCOR's parallel studies in the UK and France reinforce the U.S. findings. In the UK, cork-sealed wines commanded an 18.2% retail price premium and a 74.5% premium in on-premise dining. A French study of top AOP and IGP still wines found cork sealing nearly 86% of references and capturing 86% of total sales value, with a 15% to 26% average price premium over screwcaps widening as price tiers rose. The consistency across major markets strengthens the case that cork functions as a quality signal recognized by consumers globally, a consideration for importers and hospitality buyers sourcing across regions. Food & Beverage Magazine has also tracked the intersection of packaging cues and consumer premiumization behavior as a defining trend across the broader drinks category.
