Patrick Cimerola, Chief Human Resources Officer at Choice Hotels International, will retire at the end of 2026 after a 25-year tenure during which he helped transform the company from a mid-sized lodging franchisor into a global hospitality operator with more than 7,500 hotels across 49 countries and territories.

Cimerola joined Choice Hotels in 2001 and spent more than two decades as a central architect of its workforce culture, leadership development programs, and organizational resilience. He steered HR strategy through multiple CEO transitions, the integration of major acquisitions, and the industry-wide disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic — a stretch of volatility that tested hospitality employers across every segment.

A Legacy in People Strategy

Dom Dragisich, President and CEO of Choice Hotels International, credited Cimerola with shaping the cultural foundations that underpinned the company's growth. "His steady leadership, sound counsel, and deep commitment to our people have left an enduring mark on this organization," Dragisich said. Board Chairman Stewart Bainum, Jr., echoed that view, describing Cimerola as "the driving force behind our people strategy" and a "guiding light for our culture."

Under his watch, Choice Hotels built a reputation as a competitive hospitality employer, earning workplace recognition from external organizations for its associate experience and development programs. For a franchisor operating 22 brands across full-service upper upscale, midscale, extended stay, and economy segments, maintaining a strong employer brand is a meaningful differentiator in recruiting and retaining the management talent that flows through a system of that scale.

What Comes Next

Choice Hotels will conduct a comprehensive executive search to identify Cimerola's successor. He will remain in the CHRO role through December 2026 and then transition to a special advisor position to support leadership continuity. The deliberate handoff reflects a broader hospitality industry trend: as talent retention and workforce development remain top operational challenges, large hotel groups are investing in structured succession planning rather than abrupt C-suite departures.

The search comes at a consequential moment for hospitality HR leadership. Labor markets across lodging and foodservice hospitality have remained tight, with operators competing intensively for skilled associates at both property and corporate levels. Whoever steps into the CHRO seat will inherit a people function that has been tested — and apparently strengthened — through years of industry turbulence, making the transition both an opportunity and a high-stakes staffing decision for one of the world's largest hotel franchisors.
