Saudi Market Entry

Chipotle Mexican Grill is opening its first restaurant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia later this month at Sidra, a dining destination adjacent to Granada Mall in Riyadh. The debut extends the chain's franchise partnership with Alshaya Group, which has operated Chipotle locations across the Middle East since 2024.

The Riyadh unit will feature Chipotle's signature open-kitchen format, with guests able to build burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas, and salads from responsibly sourced proteins, rice, beans, house-made salsas, and hand-mashed guacamole. The format—long a differentiator in the fast-casual segment—translates the brand's U.S. positioning directly to the Gulf market without localized menu adaptations, a deliberate move that underscores Chipotle's commitment to menu consistency as it scales internationally.

"Expanding into the Kingdom advances our international growth strategy and provides a compelling opportunity to serve one of the Middle East's most dynamic consumer markets," said Nate Lawton, Chief Business Development Officer at Chipotle. Jeff Kellen, President of the Hospitality division at Alshaya Group, added that Chipotle "has surpassed all expectations to become one of our most loved brands" since launching in the region, signaling strong early unit economics across the partnership's existing portfolio.

16 Units and Counting

The Saudi opening is the latest milestone in a relationship that has produced 16 Chipotle restaurants across the Middle East since 2024—seven in the UAE, seven in Kuwait, and two in Qatar. For operators tracking fast-casual international expansion, the pace of that rollout—roughly eight units per year across three Gulf markets—offers a meaningful benchmark for franchise-driven growth in the region.

Saudi Arabia represents a significant step up in market scale. Riyadh alone is one of the largest consumer markets in the Gulf Cooperation Council, with a young, brand-aware population and growing appetite for international foodservice concepts. Sidra's positioning next to Granada Mall places the unit at an established retail and leisure hub, a site-selection approach consistent with how Alshaya has introduced other Western fast-casual brands to Gulf consumers.

Global Expansion in Focus

The Saudi debut is part of a broader international push that now spans more than 80 company-owned restaurants in Canada, 21 in the U.K., six in France, and two in Germany. Chipotle also entered Mexico in July 2026 with its first restaurant in Nuevo León, via a separate partnership with Latin American operator Alsea. The company currently operates more than 4,200 restaurants worldwide and is targeting 350 to 370 new openings in 2026 under its "Recipe for Growth" strategy, which includes a long-term goal of 7,000 U.S. and Canada locations.

For foodservice professionals monitoring global restaurant brand strategy, Chipotle's franchise-only model outside North America and Europe—leaning on established regional operators like Alshaya—limits direct capital exposure while accelerating market penetration. Chipotle's business development team, led by Lawton, continues to evaluate additional international markets through partnerships, joint ventures, and development agreements.
