School foodservice operator Chartwells K12 is rolling out Nutrition: Game On for the 2026–27 school year, a year-round elementary program that turns the cafeteria into a gamified nutrition experience. Timed to back-to-school, the initiative is designed to increase student engagement with new foods and healthy habits through storytelling, movement challenges, taste tests, and chef-led demonstrations.

Inside the Level Up Café

The program's centerpiece is the Level Up Café concept, where each month centers on a themed "quest" tied to specific nutrition topics. Students earn collectible badges as they complete activities, and their progress is tracked on an interactive cafeteria game board. Monthly menus reflect each quest's theme — a Cherry Limeade Smoothie Bowl for Brain Food month, Golden Turmeric Brown Rice to explore herbs and spices, Tandoori Tofu and Mango Lassi for globally inspired flavors, and a farm-to-table Chicken Caesar Wrap, among others.

A roster of program characters — Dani, Leo, Chef Sizzle, Hailey Harvest, Clara Curious, Mei Market, and Max Motion — guide students through each adventure with science activities, take-home experiences, and chef demonstrations. The structure is built explicitly around Gen Alpha engagement patterns, drawing on what Chartwells K12 describes as generational insights into how today's elementary students interact with food and learning environments.

Operator Implications

"Every meal is an opportunity to spark curiosity," said Amy Shaffer, CEO of Chartwells K12. "When students are excited to try a new recipe, taste a new ingredient, or explore flavors from around the world, nutrition becomes something they experience, not something they're taught."

For K–12 foodservice directors and contract operators, the program signals a broader shift in how school nutrition programs are being structured — away from static menu rotations and toward experience-driven dining that competes for student attention alongside out-of-cafeteria food options. By pairing chef-inspired limited-time offerings with an immersive education layer, Chartwells K12 is effectively borrowing from the playbook of restaurant-style engagement strategies to drive participation in school meal programs.

Ashley Kakas, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications at Chartwells K12, framed the program as content-led foodservice: "Nutrition: Game On combines foods students love with new flavors, memorable characters, and interactive experiences that make trying something new exciting."

With more than 19,000 associates operating in 5,000 schools nationwide, Chartwells K12 has the distribution footprint to make Nutrition: Game On one of the more consequential nutrition education rollouts in the K–12 foodservice sector this school year. The program joins existing restaurant-inspired initiatives like Pizza Daze in the company's broader effort to differentiate school dining through culinary programming rather than compliance-driven menus alone.
