Premium pet nutrition brand Canidae has rolled out Heartland, a new dog food line now available in select Walmart stores nationwide and on Walmart.com, pairing clean-label formulation with a cause-marketing component that donates 1% of every retail purchase to the American Red Cross.

What's in the Bowl

Heartland recipes list high-quality chicken, salmon, or lamb as the first ingredient and are formulated without corn, wheat, soy, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. The line draws on regeneratively farmed oatmeal, barley, and sorghum sourced from what the company describes as trusted farm partners. All production runs through Canidae's own manufacturing facility in Brownwood, Texas — a supply-chain detail increasingly valued by specialty and mass-channel retailers scrutinizing co-manufacturing risk.

The positioning tracks closely with broader premium pet food trends that have reshaped the category over the past decade: transparent ingredient sourcing, single-protein leads, and the elimination of commodity fillers. As consumers apply the same scrutiny to their pets' diets that they apply to their own, brands able to document farm-to-bowl provenance carry a meaningful merchandising edge, particularly at a mass retailer like Walmart where the premium pet segment has been expanding rapidly.

The Cause-Marketing Play

The Red Cross partnership is built into the product's retail economics rather than treated as a limited-time promotion. Chad Priest, division vice president for the American Red Cross, described the alignment as reflective of a shared "neighbors helping neighbors" ethos — language that also runs through the campaign creative. For foodservice and retail operators tracking cause-marketing strategies in food and beverage, the Heartland model is notable for its specificity: a fixed percentage of every purchase rather than a capped donation pool or one-time contribution, giving retail buyers a repeatable talking point at shelf.

To amplify the launch, Canidae enlisted GRAMMY-nominated country artist Walker Hayes, who wrote and recorded an original song, "Love is a Four-Legged Word (Heartland Version)," featuring his own dogs. Lindsey Fash, chief marketing officer for the Canidae brand, noted that Hayes' storytelling around authentic rural life aligned with the values the new line is built to represent. The song and a behind-the-scenes video are live on Canidae's YouTube channel and social platforms.

Retail Footprint and Outlook

Launching through Walmart gives Heartland immediate national scale, though availability is currently described as select locations. The Brownwood production base limits exposure to overseas supply disruptions that have rattled portions of the pet food category in recent years. Canidae is part of the Ethos Pet Brands portfolio, which also includes the Natural Balance brand, giving the parent company multiple price-tier entry points across the specialty and mass channels.
