Calgary Co-operative Association Limited has appointed Andrew Clarke as its new Chief Executive Officer, placing a retail executive with more than 30 years of international experience at the helm of one of North America's largest retail co-operatives.
Clarke began his career at Marks & Spencer in the United Kingdom before moving through senior retail roles across Europe, the United States, and other markets spanning four continents and more than a dozen countries. His background encompasses retail strategy, operations, and organizational transformation across both public and private ownership structures. He has also been noted for early adoption of AI in retail operations and was featured by CNBC and Time Magazine in 2025 for his values-driven leadership style.
What Clarke Inherits
Calgary Co-op is a substantial retail operation — approaching 500,000 members, roughly 3,800 employees, $1.2 billion in assets, and $1.5 billion in annual sales. Its footprint spans food centres, pharmacies, gas stations, wine and spirits locations, cannabis retail, and home health care centres across Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, High River, Okotoks, and Strathmore. The organization also owns Community Natural Foods, Beacon Pharmacies, and Willow Park Wines & Spirits, and holds a majority stake in Care Pharmacies — making it a significant multi-format operator with deep roots in Alberta's food and beverage retail landscape.
For operators watching grocery and food retail trends, co-operative models like Calgary Co-op present a distinct strategic challenge: balancing member expectations and cooperative principles against the competitive pressures facing mainstream grocery and specialty food retail. Clarke's appointment signals the board's intent to sharpen commercial performance without abandoning the member-first identity that defines the organization.
The Leadership Mandate
"My job is to listen to what members want from their Co-op and then work with our teams to deliver it," Clarke said. Sandy Edmonstone, Board Chair, described Clarke as bringing "the right mix of drive to increase the bottom line" alongside the vision to lead a cooperative organization.
Clarke's background in board and governance work is also notable. In cooperative structures, where the board represents member-owners rather than outside shareholders, the dynamic between governance and management is a defining operational factor — one that differentiates co-ops from conventional hospitality and retail enterprises.
Clarke steps into the role as Calgary Co-op marks its 70th year of operation, a milestone the organization is framing as a platform for its next chapter rather than simply a moment of reflection.
