A Bakery Born from Resilience After the unexpected death of her husband, John, Amy Valukas channeled her grief into building Busias XOXO, a downtown Racine, Wisconsin bakery that has become a hub for community gathering and culinary tradition. "Busias XOXO is more than a bakery—it's a place where food, creativity, and community come together," Valukas said. "Instead of giving up, I poured my heart into creating a place where people could gather, celebrate, remember, and heal."

What Busias XOXO Offers The operation now houses 27 local artisans and features handcrafted Polish baked goods, custom sugar cookies, and gourmet desserts. Weekly themed bakery menus rotate throughout the month, while cookie decorating classes and other immersive workshops draw customers seeking hands-on culinary experiences. Polish family recipes passed down through generations form the backbone of the menu. Valukas's daughter, Ally, has become central to the business, her custom cookie artistry now a signature offering.

Mission and Impact "Every week we create new desserts and experiences that encourage people to slow down, connect, and make memories," Valukas said. Her stated mission centers on creating beautiful food, preserving family traditions, supporting local makers, and providing a welcoming community space.

Why It Matters

Busias XOXO demonstrates how a single operator can build differentiation through authentic storytelling, local sourcing, and experiential offerings. The model—combining retail baked goods with workshops and community events—represents a viable revenue diversification strategy for bakeries competing in an increasingly commoditized market.
