The Expanded Playbook
Bota Box, the country's top-selling premium boxed wine brand according to Circana data through July 2026, is doubling down on football season with a significantly broader 2026 version of its "Wing It with Bota" campaign. New this year: a partnership as the Official Wine of The Tailgate Tour, the largest traveling fan experience in college football, placing the brand at 13 game-day matchups from September 6 through November 28. The move signals a deliberate push by the Delicato Family Wines brand to cement boxed wine's foothold in a sports-and-entertainment occasion historically dominated by beer and spirits.
For beverage operators and on-premise accounts eyeing the tailgate and sports-viewing occasion, the campaign is worth watching. Bota Box's shatterproof, bag-in-box format — which keeps wine fresh for up to 30 days after opening — addresses two persistent barriers to wine service in outdoor and high-volume environments: breakage risk and waste. The brand's retail footprint spans Target, Walmart, Kroger, Publix, Total Wine, and Sam's Club, with in-store shopper activations rolling out this fall.
The Recipe Contest
The national "Wing It with Bota" recipe and wine pairing contest reopens August 24 and runs through October 31, 2026. Entrants submit an original chicken wing recipe paired with a Bota Box wine at botabox.com/football. Three finalists earn an all-expenses-paid trip to compete at Guy Fieri's Flavortown Tailgate on February 14, 2027 in Los Angeles, where a grand prize winner receives two tickets to the Big Game. The contest drew hundreds of submissions across the U.S. in its 2025 debut; last year's winner, Natalie Harwood, took the title with Black Cherry Smoke RedVolution Wings judged by a panel of NFL legends.
Events and On-Site Activation
Beyond the college tour, Bota Box serves as the official wine sponsor of the 25th annual National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo, New York on August 29–30, giving the brand a high-profile, food-forward launch pad heading into the fall season. The campaign closes at Guy Fieri's fifth annual Flavortown Tailgate, billed as the largest free pre-kickoff celebration of Big Game Weekend, where a branded pop-up will feature wing-and-wine pairings from the three recipe finalists.
"For the last two decades, Bota Box's portable packaging has been making it easy for football fans to share premium wine while cheering for their favorite teams, whether that's at a tailgate or around a big screen TV at home," said Mary Wachowicz, marketing director for Bota Box. The campaign reflects a broader industry trend documented in beverage industry analysis: wine brands are aggressively courting sporting occasions to compete with RTDs and hard seltzers for the casual social drinking moment.
For restaurateurs and hospitality operators programming sports-viewing events this fall, the Bota Box play illustrates how the premium boxed wine segment is positioning itself as a practical, margin-friendly alternative to bottled wine for high-traffic, outdoor, or casual service environments. The format's 3-liter size, sustainability credentials, and extended shelf life after opening make it an operationally attractive option for restaurants managing beverage costs and waste in event settings.
