Better Baker Academy, a new online video education platform, aims to fill a long-standing gap in the baking industry by offering structured, accessible training to retail bakery employees and home bakers. Unlike formal pastry and culinary schools that train professional chefs, the platform targets the workforce already employed in retail bakeries—often skilled home bakers without access to industry-specific instruction. The platform offers video-based courses alongside a custom content option that allows bakery and restaurant owners to submit footage of their own recipes and procedures, which are then converted into exclusive training videos for their teams.
Bringing Classes Online On the consumer side, Better Baker Academy is translating in-person baking instruction to digital format for the first time. Content from founder Jen Barney—a three-time Food Network Baking Championship winner and owner of Meringue Bakery in La Crosse, Wisconsin—allows home bakers across the country to learn directly from an instructor whose classes were historically available only to those visiting her bakery in person. Barney is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and began her career as a wedding cake decorator. She has worked across the Upper Midwest designing specialty dessert lines, preparing pastries for restaurants and large banquets, and creating custom wedding cakes with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients when possible. Her specialties include edible flowers and hand-painted and sculpted cakes. "It's that same combination of technical mastery and hands-on teaching experience that Jen now brings to Better Baker Academy, translating years of in-person instruction into a platform that lets both aspiring home bakers and professional bakery teams learn from her, wherever they are."
Why It Matters
For bakery operators, the platform offers a cost-effective way to standardize training across multiple locations and upskill existing staff without requiring in-person instruction or external culinary school attendance. For home bakers and small operators, it democratizes access to professional-level instruction previously limited by geography.
