Cross-brand gifting campaigns are gaining traction as a growth channel for specialty dessert operators, and Baked by Melissa is leaning into that trend with a new national partnership with Mathnasium Learning Centers. Running August 17 through September 18, the collaboration centers on teacher appreciation — pairing the NYC-based dessert brand's bite-size cupcakes with the math tutoring franchise's 1,300-plus locations across 12 countries.
The Product Play
At the commercial core of the deal is a co-branded Mathnasium Cupcake 25-Pack, priced at $39 and available now at bakedbymelissa.com. The pack features Red Velvet, Triple Chocolate Fudge, and Red Sugar Cookie flavors wrapped in a custom Mathnasium-branded sleeve. A second SKU, the 'Back to the Grind' Cupcake 25-Pack + Gift Box ($45 and up), includes a Mathnasium-branded insert with an interactive Sudoku-style math puzzle — an on-theme gifting add-on designed for families shopping the back-to-school window. For a dessert brand that ships nationwide and operates nine retail locations, limited-edition seasonal packaging with a franchise partner represents a scalable way to move product during a high-gifting period.
On-Site Activation
Beyond e-commerce, the campaign deploys a field activation layer that puts the Baked by Melissa product directly in front of teachers and school staff. Select teachers' lounges across the country will receive what the brands are calling "Teachers' Lounge Takeovers" — pop-up celebrations stocked with co-branded cupcakes, school supplies merchandise, and back-to-school décor. Mathnasium franchisees are also expected to organize their own locally tailored versions in their communities, effectively turning the brand's franchise network into a distribution and sampling channel for Baked by Melissa.
The campaign's consumer-facing centerpiece is the Teachers Who Count Sweepstakes, open through September 18. Students nominate an educator who made a meaningful difference; the winning teacher receives a year's supply of Baked by Melissa cupcakes and an Amazon gift card for classroom supplies, while the nominating student wins a year's supply of cupcakes and a three-month Mathnasium scholarship.
"Teachers often recognize a student's potential before that student sees it themselves," said Michael Stanfield, CMO of Mathnasium. "This initiative gives students and families a meaningful way to recognize the educators who continue to believe in them, challenge them, and help them grow."
Melissa Ben-Ishay, President and co-founder of Baked by Melissa, framed the fit as values-driven: "We built Baked by Melissa on celebrating life's moments, big and small, and teachers showing up for kids every day is exactly the kind of moment worth celebrating."
For foodservice and specialty bakery operators, the playbook here is worth noting: a limited-edition co-branded SKU tied to a seasonal cultural moment, amplified through a partner's existing retail footprint and supported by earned media through a sweepstakes. It's a format that travels well beyond education — and one increasingly common in food and beverage brand partnership strategies. Operators tracking gifting and seasonal dessert category trends will recognize the back-to-school window as an underutilized occasion relative to holidays and Valentine's Day.
