A new entrant is staking its claim in the ready-to-drink cocktail aisle with a product formulation designed to stand apart from the category's dominant malt- and wine-based alternatives. Azúcar Tequila is rolling out three canned margarita flavors — Classic Lime, Spicy Lime, and Passion Fruit — made with 100% Blue Agave Blanco Tequila, real fruit, and agave nectar, launching first in Dallas and Austin with a broader Texas retail expansion and a national direct-to-consumer channel running concurrently.
Each can checks in at 5.5% ABV and 180 calories, and the full lineup is certified vegan and gluten-free — specs that position the brand squarely at the intersection of permissible indulgence and on-the-go convenience, a segment that has seen aggressive growth across beverage industry channels.
The RTD Differentiator
The brand's core argument to buyers and consumers alike is ingredient integrity. Where many RTD margaritas use malt liquor or wine as a cost-efficient base, Azúcar leans into a spirits-forward identity — a distinction that resonates with a younger cohort of drinkers increasingly scrutinizing label claims. Owner Adam Weitsman framed the ambition plainly: "We didn't build Azúcar to be another brand in a crowded RTD aisle. We built it to be best in class, period."
Texas serves as the brand's proving ground by design. Dallas and Austin offer high foot traffic across both on- and off-premise accounts, a culturally engaged consumer base, and the distribution infrastructure to test velocity before a national push. The simultaneous DTC build is a deliberate hedge — generating national brand awareness and consumer data while brick-and-mortar distribution scales.
Cavinder Twins as Creative Directors
To accelerate that awareness, Azúcar has brought in twin sisters Haley and Hanna Cavinder — former college basketball athletes turned entrepreneurs — as Creative Directors. Their role goes beyond traditional endorsement: the Cavinders are embedded in brand storytelling, social content strategy, and the experiential programming that will carry Azúcar into tailgates, watch parties, and lifestyle occasions. "We wanted to create something that felt true to how people actually drink," said Haley Cavinder. Hanna Cavinder added that the goal was for the brand to feel native to the social moments and community they already inhabit.
The celebrity creative-director model is gaining traction across the premium spirits and RTD category, as brands look for talent whose audience overlap with target demographics is organic rather than transactional. For on-premise operators — particularly sports bars, rooftop venues, and event-focused hospitality concepts — Azúcar's cultural positioning and portable format make it a candidate worth tracking for back-bar and canned cocktail program consideration as Texas distribution expands.
